Golf, much like life, is filled with highs and lows. Some days you find every fairway, the ball obeys your commands, and the hole seems twice as large when you’re over a putt. Other days, the game turns cruel and unforgiving, dropping you into situations similar to those Sungjae Im faced during the third round of the Truist Championship.
The chaos began on the 14th hole at Quail Hollow. Like many in the field, Im chose to attack the drivable 328-yard par 4. His 312-yard tee shot came to rest pin-high in the left rough, but an unfortunate bounce left the ball just inches from the water. Technically, he had a shot, but his stance was precarious. So he did what he had to: removed his right shoe and took an uneven stance with his rear foot fully submerged in the pond. After chipping close, Im drained the nine-foot birdie putt to salvage what looked like a disastrous hole.
Then things got even stranger. On the par-5 15th, Im’s approach settled in a greenside bunker just below the green. He stood over his third shot, took a few extra looks, and pulled the trigger — only to blade a wedge straight out of every golfer’s worst nightmare. The shot rocketed over the green and slammed into the grandstands behind it. An unlucky bounce made the ball ricochet backward off the stands, sending it flying toward the green. It landed with speed, rolled past the hole, and trickled all the way back into the same bunker — forcing him to replay the exact same shot after the worst-case scenario had already unfolded.
The most impressive part: Im managed to come through that two-hole stretch at even par. A solid reminder that resilience matters just as much as shot-making.
