In a move that solidifies his place as the highest-paid coach in NBA history, Steve Kerr has broken his silence regarding his two-year, $35 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors.

The deal, reportedly finalized on Saturday, locks the four-time NBA champion coach in for two more seasons, ensuring he will lead the franchise in building a new core around Stephen Curry.

Kerr shared his first public comments on the agreement, telling ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, “I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue coaching this team. This organization has meant so much to me over the past 12 years—from ownership to players, staff, and fans—and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of something so special. I’m excited to keep working with this group.”

Since taking over in 2014, Kerr has been one of the most influential coaches in modern NBA history. Under his leadership, the Warriors have captured four championships and established themselves as one of the greatest dynasties in basketball. Over 12 regular seasons, Kerr posts a 604-353 record, along with a 104-48 mark in the playoffs. His system, built on pace, space, and ball movement, has helped reshape offensive schemes across the league.

The extension comes after a challenging 2025-26 season for Golden State, which ended with a 37-45 record and an elimination in the play-in tournament. Despite injuries and roster instability throughout the year, the team’s front office remained publicly supportive of Kerr.

General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. praised Kerr following the announcement: “We’re thrilled that Steve will continue to lead the Warriors. His impact on our organization goes far beyond championships and on-court success. The character and leadership he displays every day set the tone for what we want our team to represent, now and in the future.”

As Curry enters the twilight of his career, the extension provides stability for a franchise in transition. After the Warriors’ early postseason exit, there were questions about Kerr’s long-term future, especially with rumors suggesting he might consider leaving after more than a decade with the team. However, Golden State’s commitment to continuity keeps one of the league’s most successful coaches at the helm for at least two more seasons.
